We favorably reviewed the Callaway Sure Out 2 Wedge a few years ago and that club has been a fixture in Mrs. GGB's bag ever sinse. To read the review of the Sure Out Wedge click HERE.
We recently became a dealer for the Mazel Chipper and thought it would be fun to see how it performed against the Sure Out Wedge around the green and even in the bunker. The Mazel Chipper uses a wide, and very heavy, sole to propel the club through the grass & sand. Unlike a traditional wedge swing, you use a straight back-straight through putter like motion with the Mazel Chipper. The club is really designed for the golfer that has difficulty hitting a traditional wedge out of many different lies. We've listed the specs for both the Mazel Chipper and the Callaway Sure Out below.
While designed to do much of the same things, these clubs could not look, or feel, any more different.
Mrs. GGB and I headed over to our practice facility and put both clubs through a series of different shots from around the green.
TIGHT LIES AROUND GREEN:
After a little warm up Mrs. GGB started with the Sure Out wedge from some tight lies around the green. As you can see most of her shots came up short of the hole.
Switching over to the Mazel Chipper you can see that the more upright lie of the Mazel helped her get the ball to, or past, the hole more often.
UP HILL PITCH OUT OF BERMUDA ROUGH
Hitting up hill out of Bermuda rough Mrs. GGB found that getting the heavier head of the Mazel chipper through the rough was much easier than with the Sure Out. Again her shots with the Sure Out came up short on a lot of swing even failing to reach the green. All of the shots with Mazel got onto the putting surface though some of the shots went very deep past the hole.
FULL SWING
Using a full swing with the chipper took some getting used to because, as we mentioned previously, this club works best with a straight back-straight through swing and that is the case when 5 feet from the hole or 80 yards from the hole. After she got the stroke down Mrs. GGB was able to put the ball out there 50 yards consistently and on a rope. I was able to put it out there a little farther in the 70-80 yard range.
BUNKER:
From the bunker the higher loft of the Sure Out wedge was the clear winner. Mrs. GGB struggled to even get the ball out of the bunker with Mazel chipper and skulled a few all the way off the back of the green.
SUMMARY:
For most shots around the green the Mazel chipper was the much easier club to hit, with more consistent results. The Sure Out wedge was far better club out of the bunkers. So how did these test results impact Mrs. GGB's bag? Well we felt confident that the Mazel chipper could easily replace her pitching and gap wedges, but we left the Sure Out wedge in the bag for its superior results out of the bunker.
If you are beginner golfer or someone who has struggled to consistently hit quality wedge shots, then you should check out the Mazel chipper, it might just be the club to get your score lowered. See the chipper HERE.
